pizza1.jpg (124009 bytes)SAD SAD NEWS...early Thursday Feb 9th, 2012 Steve "Sarge" Stransky peacefully passed away after a +3 yr battle with brain cancer. If you consider he was given only 2 yrs, this was a WIN! He was in the company of Family and close Friends. It was the most joyous send-off I've ever seen with music-galore--mostly Beatles' songs. :*)  There were many tears and a TON of laughter for this amazing man with great musical talents, repair skills and a great love for people! I will miss you so much, Buddy.

Rest in Peace, my dear dear dear Friend. ~chadd

WWS lives on! Steve set me (chadd) up to keep this legacy going, allowing me to buy WWS in January 2011.

This is another nice 400 model made a few years after the Selmer takeover ser. # 505,xxx. The finish is original, but is somewhat visually challenged.  It has the same body, neck with underslung octave mechanism and keywork as the famous older brother the "Top Hat" model, but with nickel plated keys.  Buescher still made great 400's through the sixties, this one was made appx. 1968.  It has a warm centered tone, but can be pushed hard with a metal mouthpiece.  Upon disassembling, we noticed several oddities to the original body, such as missing snaps and re-solder repairs but this is a great sounding sax that still has a fair price attached. The case is in bad shape but is suitable for shipping and required travels. It received a complete Buescher style rebuild but with Pisoni seamless dome resos to mimic the original style and it will go for

1599.00 Just Finished!

The best description Chadd's opinion can muster:

Late 1800s/Early 1900 Antoine Joseph Stencil Bb Tenor:

Super old, Antoine Joseph stencil/copy, museum/collector's sax just in; we even had to play it to figure out what key this thing is in!!! ...Turns out it is a vintage Bb Tenor to ONLY low B in original wood case. "Friedrich Gellner" inscribed on the bell possibly from Germany/Czechoslovakia since "Breslau" is inscribed on the bell too; Nickel plate at 90% (probably "german nickel-silver"), double octave keys, backside G#, dual G tone holes (like early bueschers have), no pearls or rollers back then...Arrived in original White Kid pads...and I could play it to low C! Enjoy the large quality photos.

AntiqueStencil1.jpg (642221 bytes) Comes in original OMG case :) , can't believe it made it this long! One reason I believe it could be into the later 1900s is because of the side C key.  The super early A.Sax designs didn't have that and my researching showed some of these "to low B" saxes being made into the 1930s by foreign copiers. But beyond that, it is something all its own.  I didn't notice it being a High Pitch sax when I tested the tuning but I'd have to check that again to be sure.  Overall, I'd say in great shape...looks to have had a heavy resolder on the neckstrap ring at one time. There are really no #s on to indicate any sort of serial number system. (a "7 Z" ? on the thumb hook.)  I am willing to sell this sax in "as is" or rebuilt condition and will definitely consider any worthy TRADE options. now $499.00 "as-is"..or $1449.00 rebuilt, with White Roo Pads OnHold/SOLD-Gillette

Crisp, sharp beautiful Art Deco engraving.  Think Johnny  Hodges tone.  Serial # 268,xxx, built about 1934.    No major damage ever done to it.  Neck looks great no pull down thanks to the art deco brace The snap in resonator system is intact, as are the Norton springs.  I did a Premium Buescher snap in pad rebuild on it and was so pleased with the sound...  I have tried it with several mouthpiece and it has a number of amazing tones, but most impressive was with my Otto Link "slant signature" hard rubber piece.  The amount of volume/output with this sax is about double what you'd expect for a late thirties horn... very close to a "The Martin Tenor" in power, but then i put a Link Master on it and it went totally airy and smooth with a centered warm tone.  really versatile.  No, the mouthpiece is not included, sorry, it's one of mine and isn't for sale. If just looked cool in the photos.   $2999.00  Note, it has a very nice original case (smells normal too, not smelly) and some original docs, the factory "guarantee" card and a couple cool old neck strings are in the case. ON HOLD for TRIAL through 4/30 double-sax trial

In original lacquer, these are hard to find in original (!) shape and well respected tenors. ser# 278K, They are versatile, warm sounding, comfortable playing tenors, with better intonation than most, even including Selmer. Has buescher snap-in pad system and gold norton springs. I  need to burnish out several very dents in the bow, a few on the back tube and neck as well; but it's a good looking sax with limited solder points. And with a complete rebuild, is will play as nice as it looks.  They have a small bore/bell design that can really punch through with the right mouthpiece. Comes in original Buescher hard case in ok condition, rope handle replacement--latches do latch but the triggers are gone. a little metal prick (car keys) will open it right up. :)  It has it's original pads and snap in domes everywhere, so i will do a faithful Buescher snap in rebuild, with metal backed pads to make it feel original.   2299.00

I just finished a faithful Buescher snap-in rebuild with metal backed pads and natural cork throughout and she cleaned up quite nice, minus the tape or stand mark on the bell, which might be evidence of relacq. I still can't say for certain. Comes in vintage wood case in fair, but useable condition.  1699.00.  Just Finished, Plays Great!

SOUND FILE (feat. THIS sax!): check out a scratch track I wrote to describe Sarge's wacky walk--the guy with a pep in his step--"SARGE POP" (played on a 1940s Dukoff 7 brass stubby mpc!).

The case is in bad shape but is suitable for shipping and required travels. It received a complete Buescher style rebuild but with Pisoni seamless dome resos to mimic the original style and it will go for 1599.00 Just Finished!

1972 Buffet Super Dynaction Tenor (w/ high F#) EXCELLENT Original Lacquer is about 98% although there are some scratches (see pics)--Beautiful Speckled Lacquer version! There are no pings, dents, or major scratches to report. one, ONLY one post is dented into the body (C# tube saddle). These compare very favorably to the famed Selmer Mark VI, usually ranked #2.  Known for its rich tone and smooth action it is a well designed heavy horn, it keeps it's adjustment well and is very reliable.  The serial number is 18,3xx, which means it was made in 1972.  the 70's models had a little more edge and some folks prefer them for that trait.  Included is the original Buffet hard case which is still in excellent shape to match (except the loss of the main handle, hmmm)--side handle is intact. The whole horn is pretty clean and is original. we can see a few original acid bleeds (D key cup, C# post...), includes yamaha replacement case. Known for its well design, these heavy horns keep adjustment well and are very reliable, also excellent intonation and crazy gadgets on the Eb/C rocker, Low Bb table, High F#, & opt. 1934 Conn Chu with "Naked Lady" Transitional tenor:  (on consignment -- plays well, PC repairs done by us) please ignore the few raindrops that made it on camera.  :)  Serial #260,xxx. If ever a sax should get relacquered, it should look like this one! This was a Professional job that we can guess happened in the late 1940s or 50s. It's a true beauty and I can't tell how many people ask us about a Pretty "chu" in lacquer. {{{could it be original?! timeline dates it to the beginning of lacquered saxes...Hmmm :) }}} So the true "cool factor" is that this tranny era Conn has the Chu keywork and the Naked Lady engravings -- all still highly visible from the pro relacquer work. It also features the distinct Rolled Tone Holes of the era and the big, early Chu sound. The sax is in overall good shape aside from the relacquer, neck looks good -- minor dings to mention (see photos) and perhaps the only major damage in its lifetime happened to the high E area where the damage only shows the repair.  Comes with an original hard case that is the oversized, tri-pack tenor case without the clarinet/flute inserts. The owner also had new Conn reso-pads installed.  2399.00  ON TRIAL-Smart

Original lacquer at 70%, signs of use with minor scratches and usual pitting. Good condition overall! These are highly sought after for their big Conn sound but they are essentially a 10M Naked Lady Deluxe version. They feature the solid silver key touches and an extreme amount of adjustable screws that can be a rookie tech's nightmare--I actually like them because they offer a preciseness to all adjustments that can be easily adjusted over time too, as needed. The case currently is a nice, modern, brown leather soft case. I might try to swap it to a nice hard case. GUARDALA:

Another really fantastic German sax is a B&S stencil, for Dave Guardala. I have been searching  for a early serial number Guardala model 500 for some time.  The craftsmanship is awesome on these horns.  Ergonomics are up there with Keilwerth and Selmer, the materials used are far above par.  The sound is unique and falls somewhere in-between a Conn "Chu" Tenor and a Keilwerth SX90R.  Here is my  description for this particular Tenor:

guardala 001.jpg (466852 bytes)guardala 004.jpg (409718 bytes)guardala 005.jpg (539907 bytes)guardala 006.jpg (359933 bytes)  Dave Guardala model DG500SP Silver Plate Tenor:  This Uber-professional level Bb Tenor saxophone is fabricated and hand made from 72% formulated Copper alloy yellow brass with full rib post construction and hand hammered bell. All rods are solid nickel silver with stainless steel screws, springs are tempered blue steel and authentic Mother of Pearl key buttons are used throughout. I repadded it myself, with Saxgourmet pads and nickel plated, brass rivetless, domed resonators.  All the Guardala extras come standard, like hand engraving on the bell (not laser engraved like the later made Guardala's), high F#, plus extensive fine tuning key adjustment screws at all critical points. This horn has triple silver plating finish with meticulous fancy hand engraving on the bell. Upper and lower key stacks are ergonomically designed for smooth, accurate and positive digital feel.

The serial number is below 4000 ( 00382x, Made in Germany). This sax was manufactured long before Dave Guardala's association with LA Sax started  (that is, the "LA SAX" Laser engraved saxes bearing his name, after B&S folded), and LA Saxes compromises in the quality of the product began appearing.  Don't be tricked, the DG500's are the real thing, serial numbers will differentiate the B&S models from the LA sax  ones.   The mouthpiece (in the pics) is mine and is not for sale or includedSilver models are estimated to be 20% higher in resale value than lacquered brass.  Available with original "faux alligator" case for 3699.00

Great story: we had the pleasure of buying this from the original owner. She got it went she was 10yrs old and played many shows (winning, of course!). All I can say is "wow". She loved this horn to keep it so nice. ...not many boys keep a sax this nice for +55yrs!  :)   These sound just about identical to a super twenty, from the same year.  The serial number is in the 358,xxx range and the original lacquer is 99% intact.  Most wear is on the palm keys, minor chair dings (as a kid) on the bottom bow. We'll burnish those out. a few replacement screws need returned to originals too; we'll take care of that. Included is the neck, the brass neck tenon cap and a King woodshell case in excellent condition as well. It's the purple two-tone version with the alligator top. = sweet vintage case! It will get our "French Standard" rebuild, but substituted large flat metal reso's, for the selmer style plastic ones--so it will have a rebuild like it rolled out with in the 1950s. Considering how beautiful she is: $2799.00

King Super 20 "SilverSonic" Tenor:   Serial #385,xxx, Mfg in 1960, when King was owned by the H.N. White Company.  Features a Sterling Silver Bell, and Neck, Hard-Nickel Silver Rods, Individually Hand-Soldered Tone Holes.  Here's what the HN White people had to say:  "The list of H. N. White super 20 players is impressive including: Mr. Julian "Cannonball" Adderley, Mr. Georgie Auld, Mr. Sam Donahue, Mr. Charlie Ventura, and the great Charlie Parker Jr.  Without a doubt what makes H. N. White instruments unique is their use of Sterling Silver Bells. Some time between 1925 and 1928, The H. N. White Company introduced the "Silver Tone" Sterling Bells option to Liberty Trumpets, Master Cornets, Clarinets, and the entire Trombone line of instruments. As stated in the 1928 complete catalog, "Sterling Silver Bell produces better tone, being clearer, richer, and more resonant, with a more pleasing quality." The engravings on "Silver Tone" instruments are some of the most elaborate and attractive works of art ever produced by an American manufacturer. A short time after World War Two (1949-1951), "Silversonic" replaced "Silver Tone" and the engraving was not as elaborate (except on Artist level), but the quality of tone remained the same. In addition, Saxophones were give the option of having a Sterling Silver Bell with the introduction of the World Famous "Super 20" and later "Silversonic Super 20", which were some of the most sought after production saxophones ever made."  Currently setup with Black Saxgourmet Roo Pads and oversized seamless flat nickel resonators and a Sarge's Premium Rebuild.  Tentatively for sale, from Sarges personal collection, i may put it at ebay soon.  SOLD

We will burnish the neck some more to its best smoothness too.  It has a non-original, vintage case that is a tri-pack--no clarinet shelf, flute set intact--in fair condition.  It will get a "French Standard" rebuild, with flat metal resos; considering that she's an earlier original AND I had to pay a fortune for her, we have to sell her for: 2199.00

The neck looks good too-- no pull down, just a couple small dings that i will do my best to remove.   These early "The Martins" are much sought after for deep, full tone. JUST IN! (pics coming soon) 1959 Silver The Martin Tenor Sax: Serial number 205,4xx, numbers match on the neck and body.   This one is in original silver plate at 75%. It does show signs of damage throughout, sadly on the bell engraving too. :(  NOTHING that looked devastating to the sound, however--makes this the perfect "player's horn", with no fear to take her to the gig and blow everyone away. The body is in overall fixable shape mechanically and cosmetically shows some signs of +50yrs. There are at least 2 posts replaced (non silver) that I think I might have fixable replacement pieces for! The neck looks good too-- no pull down, just some usual wear--however loss of the neck screw...I will have to find some replacement for that too.  The Martin Thumb hook is gone so I will need to address that too with a better replacement--Martin Mod? Selmer? you can perhaps help choose?! Martins are all known for the resonant Deep 'lows' and fullness in the sound spectrum. Comes with a SKB hard case (damage at cracked bottom corner). So after the "French Standard" rebuild, with flat metal resos; we will sell her for: 1799.00!!!

1939 Selmer Balanced Action Tenor Sax:  Serial # 28,xxx made in 1938-39, Made in France, these early Selmers are much darker in tone than the later SBAs and Mark VIs--think less treble tone. Also more beautiful that their replacements, these models always had beautiful engraving. This one is "The Sailboat."   This is is a nicer relacquer at 70% it has been played over the years so you won't feel bad about taking her out to gig. Things could be worse but she does have a patch on the neck, some solder evidence (neck receiver, limited posts, opt. F# guard). There are a few dings throughout and a few on the bow too. I'll burnish out all the dings and bell lip the best I can too. :)  Looks like she'll need us to resolder the bell-to-body brace in a serious way (removing and fixing the bell connection correctly with high heat brazing before re-installing) ...OR... you can request us to use soft solder like someone else did to keep more lacquer intact. We will give her the "French Standard" Rebuild with Prestini Pads and substitute metal domed resos to replicate the vintage original setup, and natural cork throughout. It currently comes in a vintage hard tri-pack case in Ok/Fair condition.  4899.00

Selmer Mark VI Tenor Sax:   Serial # 83,6xx made in 1959, i guess i don't need to add to the Legend about the 5 digit MK VI's, suffice it to say they are considered the best in the world and often command prices in excess of 8000.00.  These "Brecker Era" models are highly sought after for just that.  Made in France,  the body and neck are in very good shape and looked beautiful after Sherry Huntley re-engraved the original engravings,  and Anderson Silver Plating applied bright shiny Silver.  The neck has no serial number and a lot of early mk vi's had none, but i'm convinced by size , shape and match to saxes finish when i got it, that it is original.  I put in all new Stainless Steel springs and did a faithful French Standard repad, with extra ultrasuede and teflon and i even had a complete set of original MK VI plastic domed screw-back resonators, i  used.   The finished project is one of the finest playing and sharpest looking mk vi's i have had the pleasure to work on. 10,099.00 SOLD

D altos and tenors available until 156xx or so). They are the pinnacle of SML design: rolled tone holes, elaborate engraving, etc. As a matter of fact, the name comes from the fact that these horns won a couple of gold medals at the International Music Festival at The Hague (Holland) back in the 50's for their excellent design and performance.  What this essentially means is that the SML's with the most features - sans the standard altissimo F#, which seems only to have been on late King Marigaux stencils - are found in the serial # range of 15,6xx to 18,xxx. These horns should be the most sought after. I also think that the "Two Tone" finish of lacquer body and nickel-silver keys is fairly striking and SML did consider this to be a "premium finish" choice. (There are still a fair number of people that think that this set-up is indicative of a student horn -- it isn't in the case of the SML!)  I have done a "French Standard" rebuild, but substituted large flat metal reso's, for the selmer style plastic ones.  Comes with original case, in just fair shape.  I had to pay a fortune to get it, but this is what most players consider "the best" SML, so it will be worth the price  3099.00 Just Finished!
